You’re starting a business and you need a name, but you want to make sure it’s perfect.
You’re being very careful because you want to get it right the first time. You’re looking for something clever, strong, and professional. Something you can be proud of when you tell your friends.
You’ve probably been thinking about this for a while too. In fact by now, you’ve got everything figured out except for the name and it’s starting to be a problem because it’s holding you back.
After all, you’ve got business cards to make, a website to build, and you need to formally register your business with the state.
Ugh! There’s so much riding on a name but you just can’t seem to land on the perfect one.
Maybe I can help
What you’re going through is completely normal and every entrepreneur goes through something similar.
You could always go with the classic choice of your last name+your industry. Smith Supplements for example. Not exactly fun or sexy, but gets the job done.
The problem there is with originality. So many people have gone that same route, that the field is already cluttered with people using that same name for their business, and don’t even get me started on the issues with search engine optimization and finding an available domain name.
Here’s the bad news.
If you’ve thought of it, odds are someone else has already thought of it too. That’s just the way it is. So if you want something original it’s going to be difficult, but not impossible.
Here are some suggestions to help you get going:
MAKE UP A NEW WORD
This sounds questionable, but it’s been successfully done. Google is based on the word Googol. Simple enough.
You could also try adding or subtracting a few letters to the beginning or end of a word, like www.fiver.com. They just took “five” and added and “R”.
Rather than changing a word you could just combine unlikely words together like www.namecheap.com. It gets the point across, doesn’t it?
Last but not least, you could try using half of a word. Cisco is short for San Francisco, and Asus is Pegasus cut in half.
Find your domain name first
Consider finding the domain first and building your business and brand around that. Coming up with the perfect name is hard and if the domain happens to be taken when you do, it can be quite discouraging.
Checkout www.flippa.com to find domain names up for auction. Sometimes you can find great names for a bargain price, that would otherwise show as “unavailable” when searching on a domain registration website.
TRY A NAME GENERATOR TOOL
I found one that works pretty well at www.namemesh.com, which helps you come up with a name that has an available or related domain name.
It does a great job of replacing words with synonyms to help you expand your thinking without getting off track.
WORDS OF CAUTION
Historically choosing a domain with a ‘.com’ is ideal, but that’s becoming less and less important. There are a lot of suffixes out there to choose from these days, and we’ve seen some companies be successful without the ‘.com’ like www.twitch.tv.
Avoid choosing domains with hyphens (-), and don’t buy a domain that will easily be confused with a similar domain.
Perfection is the enemy.
At the end of the day, remember that a name isn’t everything. Don’t let the quest for perfection hold you back from making progress or you’ll never get anything done.
If you haven’t found something within a reasonable amount of time, just pick something and go with it. Ultimately it’s going to be the marketing and quality of your product or service that determines your success.
When you’re ready
Once you’ve chosen a name, you’ll want to lock down the domain name before someone else does. When you’re ready, watch this video which runs you through how to register your domain.
